What is ORCID?
You may have heard the term ORCID many times while submitting articles to various international journals but didn’t understand its meaning & usage.
So, what is this ORCID anyway?
ORCID, which stands for Open Researcher and Contributor ID, consists of a 16-character alphanumeric code exclusively given to a scientist, author, or researcher. It’s uniquely identifiable in the academic community and sets them apart from other researchers or contributors.
As claimed on its website, its mission is: “To realize our vision, ORCID strives to enable transparent and trustworthy connections between researchers, their contributions, and their affiliations.”
ORCID iD is a free, unique, and permanent identifier (PID) that individuals can use in their research, scholarship, and innovation activities.
The global non-profit organization ORCID was founded in 2012 with the initial aim of solving the problem of academic authors with the same or similar names.
ORCID is widely accepted in the scientific & research community and is recognized as a global standard in identifying a paper’s author(s).
This freely available system helps researchers to have more accurate identification and manage their scientific information more effectively.
Using ORCID makes it easy to write a literature review. It can be said that an ORCID is the author’s identifier. It helps you choose the correct names for the proper papers without mistaking individuals with the same name or any ambiguity.

Every scientist needs one ORCID code for their work, and I’ll give you reasons to register ORCID.
Ten reasons why?
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you didn’t receive credit for your research just because your name was mistaken for another researcher’s?
With over 8.2 billion people on the planet, name duplication is inevitable. Well, fortunately, ORCID solves this problem by assigning you a unique digital code.
Here’s why having one is essential for professionals and researchers ⤵
1. Clear Author Identification
The main goal of ORCID is to provide a unique ID assigned to each researcher. This identifier helps to reduce possible errors in identifying authors. Also, it ensures your work is accurately credited to you.
2. Centralized Research Profile
ORCID allows researchers to link all their scientific activities, publications, and contributions to a digital profile. This makes your academic portfolio easily accessible and well-organized.
3. Time-Saving and Simplified Admin Work
One of the goals of ORCID is to spend less time managing profiles by allowing trusted organizations to add research information to researchers’ profiles. This allows researchers to focus more on their research activities.
4. Boosted Visibility
ORCID allows researchers to control their profile visibility settings and, if desired, make their information publicly available. This helps increase the reach and impact of researchers’ scientific work.
5. Credibility and Accurate Attribution
ORCID helps researchers gain credit for their scientific work and ensures that scientific contributions are appropriately attributed to them. These identifiers are significant in cases where multiple people work under the same name.
6. Easy Updates for Personal Changes
Changed your name or affiliation? ORCID allows you to update your profiles in the event of name or other personal changes, ensuring that all of your work is accurately linked.
7. Global Collaboration Made Simple
ORCID facilitates international & interdisciplinary scientific collaborations by providing a standard and universal digital identifier system. Researchers can easily connect with colleagues around the world and share scientific data using ORCID.
8. Enhanced Data Quality
ORCID helps improve the quality of research data. Using ORCID iD establishes a direct connection between researchers and their work, reducing errors and increasing the accuracy of academic information.
9. Transparency and Trust
By providing a unique ORCID and linking between researchers & their contributions, ORCID helps promote transparency and trust in the global scientific community.
10. Long-Term Access
By creating a sustainable and accessible platform for research information, ORCID allows you to access your profile and research information anytime, from anywhere.
