Network-based risk assessment of country-level sustainable development goals

The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) index is an aggregate performance measure of the progress of individual countries in achieving 17 SDGs covering economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability. Using a data-driven probabilistic approach, this study aims to model the risks associated with individual SDGs in a network setting and establish the relative importance of SDGs in predicting the aggregate SDG index. Further, SDGs are prioritized relative to their impact on the SDG index while considering the two extreme risk states of individual SDGs. ‘Clean water and sanitation’ and ‘quality education’ goals have the highest diagnostic value relative to the ‘high performance’ and ‘low performance’ state of the SDG index, respectively. The network comprising the risks associated with individual SDGs is most vulnerable to ‘quality education’, whereas ‘no poverty’ can significantly reduce the …

Managing knowledge loss: a systematic literature review and future research directions

PurposeJob market shifts, such as workforce mobility and aging societies, cause the exit of knowledgeable personnel from organizations. The ensuing knowledge loss (K-loss) has broad negative effects. This study analyzes the knowledge management literature on K-loss published from 2000 to 2021 and identifies fruitful directions for future research.Design/methodology/approachThe authors conduct a systematic literature review of 74 peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2021. These articles were retrieved from ProQuest Central, Science Direct, EBSCOhost and Emerald databases. The analysis utilizes Jesson et al.’s (2011) six principles: field mapping, comprehensive search, quality assessment, data extraction, synthesis and write-up.FindingsThree sub-topics emerge from the systematic literature review: K-loss drivers, positive and negative impacts of K-loss and mitigation strategies. Over half …

Incorporating the risk of knowledge loss in supply chain risk management

PurposeThe literature on supply chain risk management (SCRM) has investigated a multitude of supply chain risks. This paper aims to make a case for the importance of managing the risk of knowledge loss in the supply chain management (SCM) function and incorporating knowledge loss as a critical risk within the SCRM process.Design/methodology/approachThis paper adopts a knowledge-based view of the SCRM process and attempts to bring to light insights based on a synthesis of the relevant literature. The authors conducted a systematic literature review of peer-reviewed articles published between 1998 and 2019. Further, a case study was conducted to illustrate the significance of the risk of knowledge loss in the SCM function in terms of how it operates and why it has such a significant impact on performance.FindingsKnowledge loss is a relatively neglected type of supply chain risk that can be added to …

Sustainability-oriented innovation in the health care supply chain

Embracing a sustainable approach in health care supply chains entails improving organizational practices and processes adopting innovative sustainable practices that contribute positively to public life quality. Although there have been significant research contributions toward the adoption of innovations in health care and the incorporation of sustainability in health care supply chains, there has been scant research that has collectively considered sustainability and innovation in health care supply chains. Our work attempts to address this research gap. The main objective of this research is to propose a sustainability-oriented innovation (SOI)-driven assessment guide and decision-making framework for health care managers to enhance sustainability. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework, health care experts from seven large renowned UAE-based hospitals were interviewed to assess health …

The adoption of artificial intelligence and robotics in the hotel industry: prospects and challenges

The growth of technology has resulted in the use of state-of-the-art systems such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robot-based applications and services in the hotel industry. Recently, there has been some discussion on the adoption of such technologies and their impact on hotels’ operational costs as well as the quality of service to customers. Considering the importance of these new technologies, this paper investigates the trend related to the adoption of AI and robotics in the hotel industry. For this purpose, we interviewed senior hotel asset managers using an in-depth case study method. The context is Dubai-based hotels as Dubai is already established as one of the premier smart cities of the world (Khan et al., 2017). The TOE framework was used, and three domains were investigated: technology, organization, and environment to expose the underlying factors effecting AI adoption. The findings expose …

Impact of risk attitude on risk, opportunity, and performance assessment of construction projects

This article explores the impact of risk attitude on the assessment of project uncertainty encompassing both risk and opportunity and expected project performance. A survey was conducted involving project risk management experts from the construction industry, and the data collected were analyzed using various statistical techniques. The findings reveal that the impact of risk attitude significantly varies across multiple dimensions of project uncertainty and project performance. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the association between risk attitude and project uncertainty and expected performance assessments has never been explored while capturing multiple dimensions of project uncertainty and performance.

Exploring the double-edged sword of familiness from a knowledge-based perspective

PurposeFor family businesses, familiness constitutes a unique bundle of resources and capabilities resulting from family relationships and influences. The extant literature has shown that familiness impacts organizational outcomes such as performance and innovation. This paper investigates the role of familiness in relation to absorptive capacity (ACAP). It also explores the specificities of nonfamily members’ social capital when different knowledge management (KM) approaches are adopted.Design/methodology/approachAn exploratory comparative case study design is adopted. Data from three family firms based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) provide the empirical setting for this study. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews, available documents, observations and company websites.FindingsOur results reveal that the role of familiness in relation to ACAP varies according to the adopted KM …
