The use of a maximum power point (MPP) tracking (MPPT) controller is required for photovoltaic (PV) systems to extract maximum power from PV panels. However, under partial shading conditions, the PV cells/panels do not receive uniform insolation due to several power maxima appear on the PV array's P-V characteristic, a global MPP (GMPP) and two or more local MPPs (LMPPs). In this scenerio, conventional MPPT methods, including pertub and observe (P&O) and incremental conductance (INC), fail to differentiate between a GMPP and a LMPP, as they converge on the MPP that makes contact first, which in most cases is one of the LMPPs. This results in considerable energy loss. To address this issue, this paper introduces a new MPPT method based on the Seagull Optimization Algorithm (SOA) to operate PV systems at GMPP with high efficiency. Investigation of partial shading scenarios on a photovoltaic array’s characteristics

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of different partial shading scenarios on a PV array’s characteristics in order to develop a simple and easy-to-implement GMPP controller that tracks the PV array’s global maximum power point (GMPP). The P-V characteristic of the PV array becomes more complicated under partial shading, owing to the presence of many power peaks, as opposed to uniform irradiance conditions, when there is only one peak called the maximum power point. In fact, and according to an experiment conducted in this study, when a PV array is partially shaded, the P-V characteristic mostly presents two peaks, given the existence of only two levels of irradiance, one of which is called the global peak (i.e., the GMPP). Furthermore, the first peak is located at Vmpp1 (the PV array’s voltage corresponds to this peak), whereas the second is at Vmpp2. The proposed approach works by estimating the values of Vmpp1 and Vmpp2 using two equations in order to control the DC/DC converter of the PV system. The first equation is used when the GMPP is at the first peak, while the other is used when the GMPP is at the second peak. Several scenarios are simulated and presented in this paper to verify the accuracy of these equations. In addition, some conclusions are drawn to suggest a simple method for tracking the GMPP.

Development of an improved GMPPT based on scanning method for PV system operating under a dynamic partial shading conditions

Under partial shading conditions (PSCs), the P-V characteristic of a photovoltaic (PV) array becomes more complicated due to the presence of more than one power peak in contrast to normal conditions (without shading) where there is only one peak named Maximum Power Point (MPP). In this paper, an improved scanning method to track the Global Maximum Power Point (GMPP) with good tracking speed is proposed. The objective of this method is to reduce the response time by limiting the search interval of scan points in the scaning method, which makes the tracking of GMPP fast and efficient under PSCs. The effectiveness of the improved scanning method is verified using a PV simulator. The results demonstrated that the proposed method effectively tracks the GMPP under different PSCs and has excellent performance in terms of response time (1.4 s) and efficiency (99.50%), which improves the …

Design and construction of a test bench to investigate the potential of floating PV systems

Floating photovoltaic systems (FPVSs) are a modern concept for clean energy generation, which combine the existing PV systems with a floating structure. Such a combination enables achieving a higher efficiency of PV modules and a best management of land resources which ensures meeting energy requirements more effectively. In this paper, an experimental investigation of a small-scale FPVS is presented. It is designed and built for research and demonstration purposes as a first attempt to analyze this concept under Moroccan operating conditions. Trusted simulation using Proteus model for a PV system: test case of an improved HC MPPT algorithm

The real implementation of the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controllers for the photovoltaic (PV) systems is still a big challenge for researchers working in this field. Often, they use simulation tools to assess the performance of their MPPT algorithms before actual implementation. In this context, this paper aims to propose a trusted simulation of a PV system designed under Proteus software. The proposed PV simulator can be used to verify and evaluate the performance of MPPT algorithms with a closer approximation to the real implementation. The main advantage of this model that it contains a real microcontroller, as can be found in reality, so that same code for the MPPT algorithm used in the simulation will be used in real implementation. In contrast, when using (Powersim Software) PSIM or Matlab/Simulink, the code of the algorithm must be rewritten once the real experiment begins, because these tools don’t provide a microcontroller or an electronic board in which our algorithm can be implemented and tested in the same way as the real experiment. After this section, a modified Hill-Climbing (HC) algorithm is introduced. The proposed algorithm can avoid the drift problem posed by conventional HC under a fast variation in insolation. The simulation results show that this method presents good performance in terms of efficiency (99.21%) and response time (10 ms), which improved by 1.2% and 70 ms respectively compared to the conventional HC algorithm.

Global MPPT of photovoltaic system based on scanning method under partial shading condition

The partial shading (PS) of the photovoltaic (PV) array is a major problem for the PV systems. Therefore, it is necessary to extract the global maximum power point (GMPP) under partial shading. In this paper, we propose a simple method to find the GMPP. This method scans the P–V curve and memorizes all the peaks in order to get the global peak. Next, we control a boost DC–DC converter to extract the GMPP from the PV system. In addition, this Method allows following the dynamic GP under variant SPs with less oscillations around the stable state compared to the existing works.
