Involute gears have traditionally been the preferred choice for gear transmission systems due to their simplicity and interchangeability. However, there are applications where they do not provide the most durable and efficient solution. While the cost of implementing optimized non-involute gears in most applications often outweighs their comparative advantages, the advent of additive manufacturing has opened up possibilities for designers to explore alternative gear tooth profiles. This is particularly relevant in the realm of plastic gears, where optimized non-involute gears produced through 3D printing can address their primary drawbacks, such as surface durability and wear resistance. The authors in Gabrielides and Sapidis (2020) presented a shape analysis of planar as well as of spatial Generalized Cubic Curves (GCC). The present paper, focusing on planar GCCs, complements (Gabrielides and Sapidis, 2020) with vital new results, offering necessary and sufficient conditions to directly identify the cases where a GCC is convex, non-convex or irregular, and/or if it presents a loop. These conditions lead to a simple and efficient algorithm, fully detailed in this paper, performing comprehensive shape interrogation of a GCC.

Existing definitions for inflection point on 3D curves lack the direct relation to local shape-characteristics of the 3D curve that the corresponding definition for planar curves has. This paper presents a new generalization of the definition of planar-curve inflection to the case of a 3D curve that is directly related to the local convexity of the 3D curve and to that of orthogonal projections of this 3D curve on planes of interest. Various properties of this new “3D-curve inflection” concept, employing standard Differential-Geometric properties of the 3D curve, are proved, establishing its usefulness for 3D-curve interrogation within current CAD/CAGD curve/surface-design systems.

Abstract “Generalized cubic curves” were introduced in Costantini and Manni (2006) as a special case of the more general results in Goodman and Mazure (2001) and Costantini, Lyche and Manni (2005). In this work, the shape of these curves is analyzed in R n, n= 1, 2, 3, proving that well-known theorems, which hold for cubic polynomials, hold also for this class of curves.
