This work presents the study of heterogeneous catalysis of sugarcane bagasse hydrothermal treatment spent liquors using a sulfonated resin. Besides, results were compared with those obtained by a conventional route using sulfuric acid as a homogeneous catalyst. Heterogeneous catalysis is suitable for the hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse hydrothermal liquors under mild conditions (100 C and 6 h). The obtained maximum xylose yield was 82% due to furfural formation, which causes a xylose selectivity drop. The hydrogenation of this xylose-rich liquor at 100 C and 3 MPa of hydrogen pressure employing a supported Ni/γ-Al 2 O 3 produced the total conversion of xylose with a selectivity towards xylitol of 100% by using a catalyst to xylose mass ratio of 0.5. Heterogeneous catalysis in a two-step route (hydrolysis and hydrogenation) constitutes an outstanding alternative to producing xylitol from sugarcane bagasse hydrothermal spent liquors since materials can be easily separated and reused in several reaction cycles.

The objective of the present work is to achieve high yield to 1-propanol (1-POH) by crude glycerol hydrogenolysis in liquid phase and find an alternative to the use of noble metals by employing Ni catalysts. Two Ni catalysts with different supports, alumina (γ-Al2O3), and a phosphorous-impregnated carbon composite (CS-P) were studied and characterized in order to determine their acid properties and metallic phases. With the Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalyst, which presented small particles of metallic Ni interacting with the acid sites of the support, it was possible to obtain a complete conversion of crude glycerol with high selectivity towards 1,2-propylene glycol (1,2 PG) (87%) at 220 °C whereas with the Ni/CS-P catalyst, the presence of AlPOx species and the Ni2P metallic phase supplied acidity to the catalyst, which promoted the C-O bond cleavage reaction of the secondary carbon of 1,2 PG to obtain 1-POH with very high selectivity (71%) at 260 °C. It was found that the employment of two consecutive reaction stages (first with Ni/ γ-Al2O3 at 220 °C and then with Ni/CS-P at 260 °C) allows reaching levels of selectivity and a yield to 1-POH (79%) comparable to noble metal-based catalysts.

Los materiales lignocelulósicos constituyen uno de los residuos más abundantes de la biomasa y han ganado gran interés en los últimos años, dado que su uso como materia prima en biorrefinerías podría dar origen a la obtención no solo de combustibles y energía, sino productos de alto valor agregado. En particular, el bagazo de caña de azúcar presenta alto contenido de xilanos, por lo que tiene un enorme potencial para su uso en la industria. El 97% del total de la producción de caña de azúcar de Argentina, se centra en las provincias de Tucumán, Jujuy y Salta, distribuyéndose el resto entre Santa Fe y Misiones. En el año 2017, según datos del Ministerio de Hacienda, Argentina produjo el 1,2% del total mundial de caña de azúcar, lo que representa una producción de alrededor de 19 millones de toneladas. Aproximadamente el 30% de la caña de azúcar se transforma en bagazo, que está compuesto por celulosa (35-43%), hemicelulosa (25-32%), lignina (21-23%), y compuestos orgánicos e inorgánicos solubles en pequeña proporción, llamados extractivos (2-11%). Esta complejidad estructural hace que sean necesarios pretratamientos para poder extraer los componentes principales. En primer lugar, se lleva a cabo un pretratamiento de autohidrólisis, en medio acuoso, que permite la desagregación de los complejos lignina-carbohidrato, alterando las propiedades físicas de la fibra y facilitando la extracción de celulosa amorfa y hemicelulosas, además de obtener un pequeño porcentaje de oligo- y monosacáridos provenientes de la hidrólisis de estos polímeros.
