This paper deals with the established research trend that seeks to enhance wind turbine generator involvement levels in fast regulation of the grid frequency (inertia emulation) along with traditional power system Alternators. At the beginning, the scattered control objectives in previous studies for wind energy conversion system are gathered in a unified scheme where it portrays an augmented control horizon that assorts different control objectives into levels and layers along with its interconnection. Despite the potential advantages of Wireless Power Transfer Systems (WPT) compared to conventional conductive systems, complicated control structures and efficiency loss due to misalignment conditions become a major concern for adopting and wide-spread deployment of WPT systems. In the proposed work a simple design procedure is discussed based on the objectives of a simple control methodology and ensuring high-efficiency operation while Power regulation is guaranteed. The procedure is illustrated using analysis, an OCTAVE model, and a validated manufactured lab prototype.

This paper comes under the fairly recent research trend of wind turbine generator participation in fast frequency regulation (inertia emulation) in coordination with conventional power system generators. At first, and with the attempt to unify the scattered control objectives in literature for highly penetrated wind turbine generation-based power systems, the paper portrays a collective control horizon for such systems that categorize various control objectives into layers and levels as well as interconnect them with each other. Then, four control techniques to provide fast primary frequency control as well as a power reserve for inertial response are identified to be the most common techniques used in the first 10 seconds of frequency excursion. Various variants of each control technique are presented, discussed, and compared.

The prevalence rate of photovoltaics (PV)-based generation systems has increased by more than 15 folds in the last decade, putting it on the top compared to any other power generation system from the expandability point of view. A portion of this huge expansion serves to energize standalone remote areas. Seeking improvements from different aspects of PV systems has been the focus of many studies. In the track of these improvements, parallel MPPT configuration for PV standalone systems have been introduced in the literature as an alternative to a series configuration to improve the overall efficiency of standalone PV systems. However, this efficiency improvement of the parallel MPPT configuration over the series one is not valid for any standalone application, therefore an assessment procedure is required to determine the most efficient MPPT configuration for different standalone applications. Therefore, in this study, an assessment procedure of parallel MPPT is conducted to demonstrate the suitability of utilizing such a configuration compared to series one, based on load daytime energy contributions. This assessment will help PV system designers to determine which MPPT configuration should be selected for applications under study. Furthermore, a new utilization of parallel MPPT configuration is introduced for operating universal input power supply (UIPS) loads to eliminate the inverter stage, thereby increasing the overall system efficiency and reliability. Finally, a systematic procedure to size the complete system is introduced and reinforced by a sizing example.

Freeze Desalination (FD) is considered an attractive desalination alternative due to its potentials to achieve reduced energy consumption compared to its counterparts. However, the physical parameters that affect the desalination process are not clearly understood. In this paper, novel experimental investigations are performed to identify statistically the dominant parameters to suspension freeze desalination systems without applying external magnetic field (MF), and parametrize the magnetic field effects on the desalting process and specify the influence of each parameter. Over 100 experiments were done to assess the performance of the imposed conditions on salt reduction levels. The Inverter's dead-time along with the inverter nonlinearities, referred to in this paper as the inverter nonidealities, are known to produce distorted voltage output. This leads to unacceptable performance at medium and low speeds. A new algorithm is proposed based on adapting a feedforward compensation voltage to mitigate the sixth harmonic feedback in the voltage and hence reduce the inverter's non-ideal behaviour even at low speeds. The proposed technique relies on mathematical analysis and linear control design rather than empirical designs. This technique is verified experimentally on a sensorless sliding mode based PMSM drive and compared to other well-known techniques in the literature.
