Bajocian–Bathonian dinoflagellate cyst assemblages from the Middle Atlas, Morocco: Palynostratigraphic and paleoenvironmental implications

The Bajocian–Bathonian transition has been identified for the first time in the Skoura syncline of the folded Middle Atlas of Morocco based on dinoflagellate cyst and palynofacies analysis of the Ich Timellaline/Bou Akrabene Formation carbonates. This palynological study involved 109 samples of marls and limestones whose organic content yielded diverse and well-preserved dinoflagellate cyst assemblages comprising 68 taxa including stratigraphic marker taxa. Two association biozones have been defined for the late Bajocian–early Bathonian interval. The Cribroperidinium crispum-Ctenidodinium cornigerum (CC/CC) biozone is defined between the base of the Recifa Formation (Upper Bajocian) and the Ich-Timellaline / Bou Akrabene Formation (Upper Bajocian–Lower Bathonian). Facies sedimentology, high-resolution sequence stratigraphy, and depositional environment in the Imini Triassic basin (southern High Atlas of Marrakech, Morocco)

In this work, we present a detailed sedimentological study of the detrital and evaporitic deposits encountered in outcrop in the Triassic (Middle Triassic to Upper Triassic) Imini basin of the High Atlas of Marrakech, overlain by Upper Triassic-Lower Liassic basaltic flows. It rests in angular unconformity on the Cambro-Ordovician basement. It may be grouped in four formations: Timalizene formation (Anisian), Clayey Sandstone formation (Anisian), Ighil formation (Carnian), and Upper clayey Siltstones formation (Norien-Rhetian). A detailed facies analysis of several sections in the basin allowed the characterization of thirteen facies types, as well as their associations in six architectural elements, typical of channel bars, overbank deposits, floodplain… It allows to establish three depositional environment models: (1) a proximal alluvial fan system, (2) a braided system, (3) an alluvial plain associated with playas lakes and …

Triassic sedimentation on the Eastern Atlantic margin: two examples from Moroccan Meseta and Portugal

The continental deposits of the Triassic basins developed along the eastern margin of the Central and North Atlantic show a similar sedimentological evolution, as those of the western margin resulting from the interaction of various processes. The examples chosen in this work are those of the Mohammedia-Benslimane-ElGara-Berrechid basin MBEB in the Moroccan meseta that we studied in detail in the field, and that we tried to compare with Portugal which is on the same East Atlantic margin. At the begininig of the Mesozoic, the northwestern part of the African continent was affected by an initial fracturing associated with the early stages of the opening of the Central Atlantic (Atlantic rift) during which several Moroccan Triassic basins are open. The present study addresses the Mohammedia–Benslimane–ElGara–Berrechid Liassic basin (MBEB) belonging to the Mesetian domain. This basin is usually considered a vast, shallow depression originating from an N-S to NE-SW half-graben structure. According to up-to-date analyses, the deposits in the MBEB basin can be subdivided into two major series: lower argillaceous-salt series attributed to the Triassic and Upper argillaceous-salt series attributed to the Liassic. Both series are separated by a basaltic complex of the Late Triassic–Early Liassic age (200 Ma). Sedimentology and Palaeoenvironments of the Triassic Deposits of the Imini Basin (High Atlas of Marrakesh, Morocco)

In this analytical work, we presented the facies and palaeoenvironments of the Triassic basin of Imini, in the southern sub-Atlasic area of the High Atlas of Marrakesh (80 km north of Ouarzazate). This basin was formed during the rifting phase that reactivated preexisting structures of the basement. The formations date to the Middle to Late Triassic. These are generally detrital and evaporitic sediments, capped by basaltic flows dating to the Late Triassic–Early Lias. The outcropping deposits are in discordance to Cambro–Ordovician schists of the basement. Our detailed sedimentological analysis identified facies associations with seven architectural elements (EA1 to EA7): CH (channels), GB (gravel bars and bedforms), SB (sandy bedforms), SG (sediment gravity flows), LS (laminated sand sheet), FF (overbank fines), and evaporites (Ev). Sedimentological and sequence stratigraphy analyses of the syn-rift triassic series of the Mohammedia–Benslimane–ElGara–Berrechid basin (Moroccan Meseta)

Sedimentological analysis has shown that during the syn-rift phase (Upper Triassic) the Mohammedia–Benslimane–ElGara–Berrechid basin (MBEB) is characterized by detrital and evaporite sediment filling. A gradual decrease of palaeoslope over time led to the evolution of paleoenvironments of proximal alluvial fans system to braided rivers and then to an anastomosing system. These environments evolve finally to an alluvial plain associated with a coastal plain where playa lakes, mudflats and lagoons had developed.

Chars are useful proxies in many disciplines such as the geosciences and archaeology. Raman spectrometry is frequently used in the characterization of such materials. However, when they are ancient and potentially altered, chars have the particularity of being oxidized, which can strongly disturb the spectra and seriously distort their interpretation. In this study, we highlight the Raman parameters affected by oxidative weathering based on comparisons between the spectra of experimental and ancient chars, of vegetal and animal origin. This makes it possible to differentiate between unweathered and weathered chars and we show that the recent methods of Raman thermometry and precursor discrimination are no longer valid when applied to oxidized chars. Nonetheless, it remains possible to estimate the formation temperature of a charcoal when some fragments are preserved at the micrometre scale. Furthermore, we propose an original tool that enable us to distinguish the vegetal or animal origin of ancient and oxidized chars. We successfully apply this new tool to charred hearth residues of the Bruniquel cave (France).
