Miniaturized frequency-reconfigurable single-feed multi-band antenna with bandwidth enhancement for wireless applications

We propose a miniaturized frequency-reconfigurable multiband antenna with bandwidth enhancement. The main radiating patch is shorted from one edge to reduce the antenna footprint. An inverted U-shape microstrip line is integrated onto the antenna structure to excite more resonant frequencies. Indeed, by shorting the U-shape's arms, seven frequency bands can be created and controlled. The activation of the two p-i-n diodes is ensured by employing a simple symmetrical DC bias network. Furthermore, by adjusting the arms’ lengths, two resonances are combined to enhance the working bandwidth. Measurements reveal that the antenna resonates around the operating frequencies of 2.91 GHz, 3.55 GHz, 3.69 GHz, 3.83 GHz, 4.14 GHz, 4.18, and 4.24 GHz. A compact four states radiation-pattern reconfigurable monopole antenna for Sub-6 GHz IoT applications

A simple design of a compact radiation-pattern reconfigurable monopole antenna with different states is proposed. The antenna switches between four radiation patterns by introducing two parasitic elements, which can be controlled by activating or deactivating two p-i-n diodes. The antenna presents two opposite-direction unidirectional modes, one bidirectional mode, and one omnidirectional mode. Few lumped components are used in the DC bias network, reducing the fabrication cost and antenna complexity. An antenna prototype is fabricated and tested to validate the proposed approach. The common operating frequency band measured realized gain and realized efficiency ranging from 3.36 GHz to 3.6 GHz, 2.13 dBi to 4.93 dBi, and 62% to 82%, respectively. Characteristic mode analysis of a compact circularly polarized rotated square slot antenna

Presented in this paper is a circularly polarized (CP) wide 45° rotated slot antenna with a broad bandwidth. Characteristic mode analysis is initially carried out to show that, by simply rotating a square slot, CP waves can be radiated if it is properly excited. A simple 50 Ω feedline is then designed to excite the slot for the generation of broadband CP waves. The antenna has a total volume of 30 × 30 × 1.6 mm3. Measurement results indicate a broad S11 ≤ −10 dB impedance bandwidth of 85.7% (3.2–8 GHz), a broadband 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 57.1% (3.5–6.3 GHz) and a peak gain of 3.6 dBi are obtained by the antenna. The proposed antenna possesses stable radiation patterns as well as relatively flat gain over its operational bandwidth in addition to being compact. Miniaturized Bandwidth Reconfigurable Yagi-Uda Antenna for Wireless Applications

We propose a miniaturized Yagi-Uda antenna with a reconfigurable operating bandwidth. The antenna miniaturization and bandwidth enhancement are achieved based on manipulating the shape and the position of the antenna reflector and director. Indeed, by coupling effects, three resonances are combined to broaden the impedance bandwidth without affecting much the radiation characteristics. On the other hand, the reconfigurability function is ensured based on the insertion of one varactor diode onto the antenna reflector. The measured results reveal that the proposed design has the merits of a miniaturized one-layer design with 75% size reduction compared with the conventional antenna, a measured peak gain of 4.57 dBi, a peak efficiency of 97%, a smoothly tunable relative bandwidth of 10% to 30%, and a simple DC-bias network with less lumped components. Bandwidth enhancement of compact patch antennas by loading inverted “L” and “T” strips

We propose simple designs of compact patch antennas with bandwidth enhancement. Firstly, an inverted “L” strip is loaded onto the corner of one radiating patch edge to create an additional resonant mode which can be combined with that one of the conventional patch to enhance the operating bandwidth. Secondly, the “L” strip is replaced by inverted “T” strip to improve further the bandwidth by creating two adjustable resonant modes. The two proposed patch antennas have the particularity of enhancing the bandwidth significantly without increasing their profile and their overall sizes. Two antenna prototypes are fabricated and tested. Measurements reveal that the patch antenna loaded with “L” strip has stable radiation characteristics with 5.2 times enhancement in the relative bandwidth compared with a conventional patch antenna. In this paper, we propose a miniaturized and wideband patch antenna for C-band applications. The antenna miniaturization is obtained by loading shorting vias along one patch edge. At the same time, the wideband performance is achieved by combining two resonances using one feed line. The measured results reveal that the antenna covers the frequency band 4.32 GHz to 6.52 GHz (41%) with a peak gain and a peak efficiency of 5.5 dBi and 87%, respectively. The antenna occupies a relatively small size of only 26 x 22 x 5.6 mm 3, making it suitable for compact wireless devices requiring a stable unidirectional gain over a wide frequency range.

Miniaturized frequency‐tunable self‐quadruplexing four‐element MIMO antenna system

We propose a self‐quadruplexing four‐element multiple‐input‐multiple‐output (MIMO) antenna system with frequency agility. Four separately‐fed orthogonal U‐slots are cut from the same cavity to locate the radiating patches. The frequency tuning is realized by inserting four varactors into the radiating structures. Metalized vias are used for antenna miniaturization and to reduce the coupling between the radiating elements. Also, the antenna exploits the slits realized in its ground plane to further increase the isolation. Truly, the isolation between the elements is enhanced from 8 to 16 dB when they are tuned concurrently. The antenna system has the added merit of tuning each element separately to excite four different operating frequencies exhibiting the self‐quadruplexing function. An efficient hybrid solar and electromagnetic harvesting system for autonomous operation of small sensors

In this study, we propose a combination of solar cells and a rectenna to realize a solar and electromagnetic energy harvesting system. The proposed harvester consists of a circular slot antenna, a rectifier circuit which is designed with a reverse-biased Schottky diode, and SHJ solar cells with a combination of AZO/TiO2 as antireflection coating and a diffraction grating morphology. Each designed component has been characterized through simulations and measurements. First, the solar cells are designed and investigated separately. Then, they are carefully placed near the slot loop antenna, which is attached to the rectifier circuit, to realize the combined harvesting system. The heterojunction solar cells with an intrinsic thin layer (SHJ) have been designed based on light trapping mechanism, which reduces the reflection of solar radiation and interfacial traps effects significantly.
