Combined Modeling of Multivariate Analysis and Geostatistics in Assessing Groundwater Irrigation Sustenance in the Middle Cheliff Plain (North Africa)

The assessment of groundwater irrigation using robust tools is essential for the sustenance of the agro-environment in arid and semi-arid regions. This study presents a reliable method consisting of a combination of multivariate analysis and geostatistical modeling to assess groundwater irrigation resources in the Western Middle Cheliff (Algeria). For this goal, mean data from 87 wells collected during April to July 2017 were used. The hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) using the Q-mode approach revealed three distinct water types, with mineralization increasing from cluster 1 to cluster 3. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) utilizing the Varimax method approach allowed the extraction of three main components: the first and second (PC1, PC2), revealing that the geogenic process, have influenced the hydrogeochemical composition of groundwater. The pollution induced by agriculture activities has been related to PC3. Based on the combination of multivariate analysis and geostatistical modeling, the distribution maps were created by interpolating the factor distribution values acquired in the study region using the ordinary kriging (OK) interpolation method. The findings revealed that both natural processes and man-made activities have a substantial impact on the quality of groundwater irrigation. Cluster mapping, another often used combining approach, has shown its effectiveness in assisting groundwater resource management.

Geochemical characterization of the salinity of irrigated soils in arid regions (Biskra, SE Algeria)

The agriculture in Biskra, southeastern Algeria, is based on traditional practices and characterized by small irrigated fields. In the last decades, the increasing demand in water as well as the scarcity of rainfall has forced many farmers to use groundwater of low quality to maintain the profitability of their crops. Unfortunately, this practice seems to be the main harmful factor for soil quality in the region since it is responsible for the salinization of the irrigated areas. Aiming to assess the impact of this phenomenon, the soils of the irrigated perimeter of El Ghrous—a representative rural community located in the west of Biskra—have been analyzed. Performance of random forest and buffer analysis of Sentinel-2 data for modelling soil salinity in the Lower-Cheliff plain (Algeria)

Modelling approaches are becoming an efficient tool in the forecasting of the salinization spread impact on the local and global scales. In the Lower-Cheliff plain, updating the information on soil salinity expansion is more than required as it continues to damage the agricultural environment in there. Predictive mapping of soil electrical conductivity as a Proxy of soil salinity in south-east of Algeria

In semi-arid and arid areas soil salinity has adverse effects both on the environment and agricultural production. The region of Biskra (South-East of Algeria) underwent a strong agricultural transformation from traditional oasis agriculture to an almost exclusive production of dates involving market gardening throughout the year. The quality of water can certainly influence the soil‟ s quality, harm most crops, and lead to unusable soil. Indeed, water scarcity and salinity of groundwater used for irrigation are the main constraints for agricultural production in arid and semi-arid areas. The present work was carried out in EL Ghrous area (Biskra, SE of Algeria). Bearing in mind that the agricultural production in that area is mainly based on groundwater irrigation, this study aimed to compare the performance of two interpolation methods: Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) and Ordinary Kriging (OK) for spatial mapping of the electrical conductivity of groundwater used for irrigation and their effects on soil quality in that area. To do so, a total of 59 water samples and 42 soil samples were collected and analyzed in the laboratory. The aim was to apply interpolation methods coupled with a Geographic Information System (GIS) to select the method that would give better performance. This will offer managers an effective tool to better manage water and soil resources, and to monitor the quality of water used for irrigation in the El Ghrous perimeter.
