Modelling of railway embankment stabilized with geotextile, geo-foam, and waste aggregates

This paper investigates the significance of using different combinations of geotextile, geo-foam, and construction and demolition waste for the reinforcement of soft clay soil. The vertical deformations of railway embankments were determined under a moving train load of 125 kN using the commercially available software package ABAQUS. It is also investigated the effect of train speed on the predicted vertical deformation. 3D numerical modelling was conducted using different depths of geo-foam coated at the top surface by a layer of geotextile. Finite element analysis (FEA) using the Modified Cam-Clay model was performed and is divided into two categories: general static analysis and dynamic analysis. The results showed the reinforcement of soft clay with C&D, geo-foam coated with geotextile reduced the predicted vertical deformations. Performance characteristics of asphalt mixtures with industrial waste/by-product materials as mineral fillers under static and cyclic loading

The mineral filler is an integral constituent of asphalt mixture, which affects its performance. This research investigates the effect of using four local industrial waste/by-product materials (marble, granite, steel slag and hydrated lime powder) as mineral fillers on asphalt mixtures characteristics. The detailed performance of these materials as well as asphalt binder and asphalt mixture characteristics are presented. In Egypt, limestone powder is a typical mineral filler in asphalt mixture composition. A control asphalt mixture with limestone mineral filler is designed using Marshall method. Other four asphalt mixtures are prepared using similar constituents and volumetrics except replacing the limestone filler with other types of industrial waste/by-product materials, while maintaining the same percentage of mineral filler as in the control mix. Modeling resilient modulus of subgrade soils using LSSVM optimized with swarm intelligence algorithms

Resilient modulus (Mr) of subgrade soils is one of the crucial inputs in pavement structural design methods. However, the spatial variability of soil properties and the nature of test protocols, the laboratory determination of Mr has become inexpedient. This paper aims to design an accurate soft computing technique for the prediction of Mr of subgrade soils using the hybrid least square support vector machine (LSSVM) approaches. Six swarm intelligence algorithms, namely particle swarm optimization (PSO), grey wolf optimizer (GWO), symbiotic organisms search (SOS), salp swarm algorithm (SSA), slime mould algorithm (SMA), and Harris hawks optimization (HHO) have been applied and compared to optimize the LSSVM parameters. Integrated and holistic knowledge map of resilient modulus studies for pavement materials: A scientometric analysis and bibliometric review of research frontiers and prospects

Since the establishment of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) in 1960, the design of pavement structures has improved tremendously. The characterization of pavement materials has gained significant popularity all around the world. Throughout several decades, researchers have conducted extensive research in material characterization and unanimously agree that resilient modulus (MR) is one of the prime factors in predicting the pavement layers' performance. Evaluation of reclaimed asphalt pavement as base/subbase material in Egypt

The application of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) has become a common practice in road construction as a substitute to natural aggregate. The significance of RAP amount on the resilient modulus behavior, shear strength and hydraulic conductivity characteristics of unbound granular base materials were investigated in this research. RAP was blended with crushed aggregate by different percentages ranging from 0% to 100% by the blend weight. The laboratory testing program includes modified compaction, California Bearing Ratio (CBR), permeability, and repeated and static triaxial tests. A descriptive statistical analysis was conducted on all testing results. Furthermore, the X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning technique was applied to investigate the internal (micro) structure of specimens. Safety and mobility effects of installing speed-humps within unconventional median U-turn intersections

The main aim of this paper is to evaluate the effects of installing speed-humps on the safety and mobility of the unconventional median U-turn, three-leg intersections, using the VISSIM microscopic traffic simulation model. The average delay was used as the measure of mobility, while the simulated conflict ratio based on the time-to-collision (TTC) surrogate safety measure, was used as an indicator of safety performance. The surrogate safety assessment model (SSAM) was applied to extract traffic conflicts, with TTC ≤ 1.50 s, which represent less severe conflicts, and TTC ≤ 0.50 s, that represent severe conflicts. The results show that hump speeds of 5.0 km/h significantly increase the intersection average delay by 109–448% and severely increase traffic conflicts, regardless of the hump location. The characteristics of the unbound base layer have been recognized to influence the performance of flexible pavements to wide extents depending on climate conditions, construction quality, material source, traffic level, and pavement structure. Effect of reclaimed asphalt pavement in granular base layers on predicted pavement performance in Egypt

This research presents the prediction of pavement performance constructed with base layer consisting of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP)/virgin aggregate blends. The prediction was made by the Multi-Layer Elastic Analysis software (KENLAYER) in terms of horizontal tensile strain at the bottom of AC layer and the vertical resilient strain at critical locations within the pavement system. The dynamic modulus |E*| for the hot mix asphalt was estimated by using the quality-related specifications software considering three different climatic conditions and two levels of design speeds. Finally, total pavement rutting and fatigue cracking were determined using the critical strains computed by the Multi-Layer Elastic Analysis along with the Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide performance models and transfer functions.
