This study assessed, for the first time, the bioaccumulation of trace metals in the tissues of Sabellaria alveolata (Annelida: Polychaeta) collected from the Essaouira protected coastal area (Atlantic coast of Morocco), and examined the relationships between metal contents and some physico-chemical parameters of seawater. The biogenic reefs of S. alveolata were seasonally collected from April 2017 to February 2018, and physico-chemical parameters of seawater were measured. In the laboratory, dried and mineralized samples of S. alveolata were analysed using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The physico-chemical parameters of seawater are within acceptable limits for survival, growth and metabolic activity of aquatic organisms, and metal concentrations in the tissues of S. alveolata showed decreasing levels in the order Fe > Al > Zn > Cu > Cd > Cr > Pb > …

In the present study, we assessed the spatial and temporal distributions of metal contents and their environmental risks in the surface sediments from Essaouira protected coastal area (Atlantic coast of Morocco). Surface sediment samples of the biogenic reefs of Sabellaria alveolata (Annelida: Polychaeta) were collected seasonally, and the fine fraction (< 63 μ m) analysed using Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The sediment characteristics of this coastal zone were comparable to other Moroccan coastlines, and the sequence of metal concentrations decreased Al> Fe> Zn> Cr> Cu> Pb> Cd. Concentrations were lower than mean Earth crustal contents and world average background levels except for Cd. Spatial distribution and structure of benthic polychaete communities of Essaouira intertidal rocky shores (Atlantic coast of Morocco)

Polychaetes are one of the most important groups of macrobenthic organisms in coastal and marine environments, in terms of diversity and abundance, and play an important role in the functioning of ecosystem. This study aims to describe the structure and spatial distribution of polychaete communities along Essaouira’s rocky shoreline (Atlantic coast of Morocco) in relation to the major environmental variables such as granulometry, salinity, temperature, pH, and intertidal range. Twelve sites from these intertidal rocky shores were sampled using a quadrat method during the summer 2016. A total of 4 435 individuals belonging to 34 taxa were recorded. Among the families, Sabellaridae (24%) and Nereididae (23%) were ranked first in terms of abundance of individuals.
