Methods and formulations for use of phase change materials (PCMs) as coatings or integrated with building materials are disclosed. A formulation comprises an amount of phase change material, for example a mass fraction of about 0.01 to about 0.50. The PCM materials may be applied as a surface treatment such as paint, for example in order to provide improved thermal regulation to a building or a portion thereof.

The nature of cracking in flexural specimens made using ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is studied in the context of mechanisms of enhanced strength and ductility. The effect of fibers on the suppression of cracking and the attendant toughening mechanisms are addressed at two different fiber contents to elucidate the strain-softening and strain-hardening responses. Results indicate that the first crack strength is directly related to the fiber content, with fibers extending the stable crack growth region at high fiber contents such that flexural strengths as high as 20 MPa are obtained. Fiber bridging results in resistance to crack growth, stabilization, as well as multiple crack formation, all of which contribute to toughening. The nanomechanical signature of highly heterogeneous ultra-high performance (UHP) cement pastes are explored in this paper. The UHP pastes are proportioned using 30% or 50% (by mass) of commonly available cement replacement materials including fly ash, microsilica, and fine limestone. Nanoindentation experiments coupled with a Bayesian information criterion-based statistical approach is used to develop modulus-hardness (M−H) clusters for the UHP pastes. While typical low-density (LD) and high-density (HD) C-S-H phases are present in early-age UHP pastes, it is shown that an ultra-high stiffness (UHS) phase, which is a composite of HD C-S-H and nanoscale CH, is predominant at later ages.
