A Battery Powered 3MW Matrix Inverter As A Black Start Unit To Replace Diesel Powered Black Start Generator In A Grid Connected Power Generation Plant

A power plant generator that supply a nationwide grid generally using the grid power itself to create the essential magnetic flux inside the generator's large rotor via a feedback connection from the grid to the rotor winding. Without the magnetic flux in the rotor winding, the generator could not produce the required electrical output at the output terminal, even when the rotor rotates at the required rated turning speed. During grid total blackout or unplanned outage, the grid has no electrical power and voltage at all, thus no magnetic flux will be produce by the rotor winding. To kickstart the generator, the rotor winding must be powered up first. As the grid is without its power, the rotor winding must get the voltage to restart its magnetic field from elsewhere. The solution is by using a blackstart diesel generator. However, a diesel generator has a lot of moving parts, and discharge exhaust fumes that are polluting the …

The Covid-19 disease is a highly contagious disease that causes respiratory tracts and lung infections, where some of the cases can lead to fatalities. Malaysia recorded the first Covid-19 case on January 25th, 2020. Although the government at the time considered the disease was not a threat, as the days went by the cases started to increase. The total lockdown measure, also known as the movement control order (MCO) was declared by the new Government of Malaysia following the surge of Covid-19 cases in early March 2020. The new prime minister, following a change of government, announced that schools were to be closed, offices and non-essential business activities were told to cease operation, and people were ordered to stay in their homes. As a newly industrialized country, with little economic activities, there were significant drops in the energy demand in Malaysia. This paper analyzes the change in …

As the world moves toward renewable energy as the main energy source, power electronics systems particularly inverter has become an essential part of the world utility and grid system. The unpredictable nature of renewable energy sources necessitates the use of energy storage systems, especially batteries. The batteries reproduce the stored energy in DC, and because generally the grid and connected loads are AC, the inverter played the main role of interconnecting the batteries and the grid. The modular multilevel converter has been around for almost 20 years, and has been used extensively around the world. In order to reduce the output harmonics and deliver an almost clean sinusoidal output, a high number of output level is needed, hence the need for more components particularly the dedicated DC source for each module. Matrix Inverter: A Multilevel Inverter Based on Matrix Converter Switch Matrix

This paper presents a new concept of matrix converter application as an inverter. A matrix converter is commonly used as an AC-to-AC conversion device. Hypothetically the AC sources of the matrix converter can be replaced with DC sources. By using a switching strategy similar to a multilevel inverter switching strategy, and some modification on the matrix converter topology, the matrix converter is able to produce a stepped output waveform similar to a multilevel inverter output. The proposed matrix inverter is fundamentally built on the basis of the combination of matrix converter topology with the DC-to-AC conversion technique of a multilevel inverter. The number of rows in the switches matrix represents the number of output voltage level, while the number of columns represents the number of output phases.
