The combination of meta-heuristic algorithms with chaos functions brings significant improvement in non-linear and non-convex problems. Since these functions replace the random distributions of the exploration and exploitation stages, the need for meta-heuristic algorithms to create a balance between these two stages is greatly improved (Kaveh, in Advances in meta-heuristic algorithms for optimal design of structures, Springer, Cham, Switzerland, 2021). In recent research, algorithms from different groups such as evolutionary and swarm intelligence algorithms in combination with chaos functions have been significantly improved.

The obnoxious p-median problem consists of locating p facilities among a set of sites such that the sum distance from any demand to its nearest facility and the dispersion among facilities are maximized. In this paper, the multi-objective colliding bodies optimization algorithm (MOCBO) is utilized to obtain the trade-off curve of the obnoxious p-median problems. The performance of the developed optimization method is investigated for locating obnoxious facilities through two case studies to maximize the two conflicting objectives. The performance of the MOCBO algorithm is further compared with those of the MPSO and NSGA-II algorithms representative of the state of the art in the field of multi-objective optimization. In this study, the MOCBO algorithm showed suitable convergence performance and generalization abilities compared to the MPSO and NSGA-II algorithms.

Optimization of non-linear and non-convex modes is one of the most used scientific problems in recent decades. In order to increase the efficiency of meta-heuristic algorithms, the technology related to embedding chaotic systems in the exploration and exploitation parts of these algorithms brings significant progress. By embedding chaotic time series, premature convergence of algorithms is prevented and local optima converge towards global optima. By creating chaotic jumps in the two important phases of exploration and exploitation, chaotic series saves them from the trap of local optima and creates a balance between the phases of exploration and exploitation. Due to a large number of design variables involved in the optimization of RC structures, a multi stage cascade optimization is used. This algorithm speeds up an accurate optimal design for the large-scale structures reducing the number of variables by dividing single optimization to a number of stages such that the optimization of each stage starts with the optimum results of the previous one. Here, the first stage of cascade optimization method uses the assembling of the stiffness matrix of the entire RC structure for minimizing the torsion of the stories as an objective function. By assembling the stiffness matrix of the RC frame without shear walls and the shear wall alone, the length and thickness of the shear wall on each story are taken as design variables of the first stage. The optimized reinforcement arrangement of walls according to the required wall rebar area is the goal of the next stage. Using this method, designing the RC structure and minimizing the structural torsion of each floor simultaneously, can result in different length and thickness for the shear walls in different stories. Reducing the structural torsion leads to economical structure. Here, the MATLAB and ETABS interfacing are utilized.

The Thermal Exchange Optimization (TEO), is one of the physical algorithms and is inspired by Newton’s law of cooling. This algorithm was introduced in 2017 by Kaveh et al. According to Newton’s law of cooling, the rate of heat loss of an object is proportional to the temperature difference between the object and the surrounding environment. In this algorithm, each particle is considered as a cooling or heating object, and by assuming the other agent as the environment, heat exchange is done between the two.

In meta-heuristic algorithms, two important stages of exploration and exploitation are considered in order to converge towards optimal answers. In the exploration phase, we settle on the points of the search space that have a privileged strategy, and in the exploitation phase, we carefully examine the area related to the neighborhood of the selected points. The Random Search algorithm (RS) is a fully exploration algorithm, while the Hill Climbing algorithm (HC) and Tabu Search algorithms (TS) are fully exploitation.

The natural frequencies of the structures have useful information about the dynamic behavior of the structures and one can easily control the dynamic behavior of a structural system by their swift evaluation. In the construction industry, material handling plays an important role. Finding proper locations for construction facilities not only can affect the expenses, but also it can impact on the process of handling of construction materials. Therefore, in order to supply engineering demands and materials, the construction site layout planning problem (CSLP) within a short-distance transportation is considered as an NP-hard problem. Thus, the researchers are extensively using metaheuristics in order to solve the construction site layout planning problems. This study presents a comparative study of ten physics-inspired metaheuristics with regard to their efficacy in how they can address a real construction site layout problem. In this vein, two case studies are examined in terms of the site layout planning. Finally, the findings reveal that Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) and Thermal Exchange Optimization (TEO) have the ability to come up with better solutions, in comparison to other considered optimization algorithms.

The formation of suitable cycle bases corresponding to sparse flexibility matrices for the force method of frame analysis has always been an interesting problem in structural mechanics. These cycle bases are needed for the formation of static bases for efficient force method of structural analysis. Similarly, such bases are required in the mesh analysis of other networks. This paper reviews methods for the cycle basis selection by utilizing different embeddings on higher dimensional topological spaces, and using the ideas and concept from this study, graph theory algorithms are developed for efficient computational algorithms for the formation of subminimal, and minimal cycle bases.

The work analyzes the buckling behavior of size-dependent microplates with a metal foam core, covered by graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs)-embedded nanocomposite patches. Microplates rest on a bi-parameter elastic substrate, and they are immersed in a thermal environment to observe the effect of temperature fluctuations on their elastic buckling performance. All material properties for each layer of the microstructure are thickness-dependent. A novel quasi-3D shear and normal (Q-3D S-N) hyperbolic theory is here proposed to describe the kinematic relations, accounting for the transverse normal strain. At the same time, a modified couple stress theory (MCST) is employed to account for the size dependence of the mechanical behavior due to the presence of a material length-scale parameter. Optimal seismic design of structures is a branch of structural optimization being developed by many researchers. Many optimization problems and solution methods have been proposed considering various seismic design procedures. This article is a comprehensive review of seismic design optimization of structures incorporating multi-objective problems. Different optimization types consisting of sizing, topology and shape optimizations applied to the seismic design are considered, and their solution methods are reviewed. Furthermore, advances in optimal seismic design of both building and nonbuilding structures are discussed. The developments in different disciplines of seismic design optimization are reviewed, and some open concerns and the relevant subjects deserving further research in the future are explained.
