Novel Energy Harvesting and SWIPT System at 28 GHz with a Simple Phased Array

Published On 2023/9/4

The realization of future radiative wireless power transfer products necessitates a simple and low-cost phased array with higher frequency to increase the beam efficiency. Further, simultaneous wireless power and information transfer (SWIPT) are also expected. This study developed a simple phased array at 28 GHz while considering energy harvesting from 5G radio waves. The number of antenna elements in the phased array with parasitic elements were reduced and novel, simple, and low-cost phase shifters were employed. Consequently, beam steering and SWIPT experiments were conducted using the developed phased array. This study expanded upon the developed phased array and the experimental results in Japan.

Analysis and experimental validation of the WPT efficiency of the both-sides retrodirective system

The retrodirective antenna array is considered as a mechanism to enable target tracking of a power receiver for long range wireless power transfer (WPT) due to its simplicity in implementation using only analog circuits. By installing the retrodirective capability on both the generator and rectenna arrays, a feedback loop that produces a high efficiency WPT channel is created. In this paper, we characterize the dynamics of this phenomenon using a discrete-time state-space model based on S-parameters and show that the system can naturally achieve maximum theoretical WPT efficiency. We further confirmed the theoretical analysis through a hardware experiment using a 12-port circuit board with measurable S-parameters mimicking a static wireless channel. The results collected from the hardware experiment show agreement with the proposed theoretical framework by comparing the theoretical efficiency with the …

Large and Simple Phased Array System at 28 GHz for Beam Wireless Power Transfer

Space-based solar power (SBSP) is envisioned as a future CO 2 -free power station in space. One of the critical technologies for SBSP is beam wireless power transfer (WPT). In this paper, we present the development of a new large and straightforward phased array system operating at 28GHz, designed for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). We believe that SWIPT is a crucial step toward realizing SBSP. This paper introduces the developed phased array, focusing on its applications in SWIPT as a business system and its potential as the primary technology for SBSP, the largest anticipated application of WPT.

Far-Field Beam Wireless Power Transfer with Combination of Beam Forming and Optical Target Detection

Far-field wireless power transfer (WPT) is an efficient unconscious wireless power system with high efficiency. The present study used optical target-detecting and beam-forming technology to build an unconscious WPT tracking system. The coordinate position of the target is obtained from the image recognition module and transformed into the phase information of the phased array, which transmits microwave waves beyond the target position by controlling the microwave beam. The camera and microcomputer unit are adopted to control the beam in the proposed system. Here, the transmitting array receives the voltage data from the rectenna array via Bluetooth low energy. Then, the transmitting array readjusts the amplitude and the phase. The transmitting system can also adjust the phase with a resolution of 0.09°. We showed that a smartphone can be charged at a transmission distance of 40 cm.

Coherent Power Combining of Four-Way Injection-Locked 5.8-GHz Magnetrons Based on a Five-Port Hybrid Waveguide Combiner

A high-efficiency power-combining method for four-way 5.8-GHz magnetrons based on the external injection-locking technique is presented in this article. The method uses a nonisolated, lossless five-port hybrid waveguide combiner for power combining. Meanwhile, the injection-locking technology has been applied to magnetrons for achieving coherent power combining. The phase fluctuation of the injection-locked magnetron, without the presence of a phase-locked loop, measured nearly 2.5 . In contrast, when a phase-locked loop was introduced, the phase fluctuation reduced significantly to approximately 0.5 . This phase accuracy can fully meet the requirements of combining experiments. Four magnetrons worked in injection-locked states without phase-locked loop. The proposed power-combining system is designed, measured, and analyzed. Measurement results show that a high-power …

Aperture-coupled beam-scanning patch array with parasitic elements using a reconfigurable series-fed phase-shifting structure

In this letter, we propose a reconfigurable series-fed phase-shifting structure with movable metal plate for active millimeter wave beam-scanning application. The proposed phase-shifting structure can be equivalent to a certain number of phase shifters in the series-fed network. It can be easily controlled with only one meta l plate, which further simplify the design of control system for phase shifters and reduce the cost. A prototype of 1-D aperture-coupled patch array with parasitic elements at 28 GHz is designed, fabricated, and measured for verifying the performance of the proposed phase-shifting structure. The measurement results at 28 GHz show that 1-D beam-steering capability with maximum steering angle of ∼22° at the H -plane can be achieved, revealing great potentials for developing the simple control and cost-effective active phased array for millimeter wave wireless power transmission application.

An Integrated Planar Guanella Balun with the Quasi-Coaxial Structure on GaAs Substrate

This paper proposes a planar Guanella balun with the quasi-coaxial structure. This is the first report of the Guanella balun fabricated on a GaAs substrate. The quasi-coaxial structure is configured with metal layers on three thin dielectric layers of a few micrometers thickness. These layers are laminated on the GaAs substrate. The metal on the second layer (the second metal) is an inner conductor, which is surrounded by the first and third metals correspond to an outer conductor. The first and third metals are split lines to widen the inner conductor. The fabricated Guanella balun has a spiral shape, and its size is by . The fabricated Guanella balun shows less than of amplitude imbalance and 7.3 degrees of phase imbalance from 5 GHz to 15GHz. The fabricated Guanella balun is realized with half elements of a Marchand balun and achieves good performance with small size.

Graded Index Fiber-Inspired 3-D Printed Surface Focusing Porous Dielectric Structure With GaAs MMIC Rectenna Towards Millimeter Wave Wireless Power Transfer Application

Borrowing the idea of the graded-index (GRIN) fiber, we propose an all-dielectric porous structure with a unique surface focusing feature to improve the performance of the rectenna for millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) wireless power transfer (WPT) applications in this letter. The on- and off-axis focusing properties of the proposed structure are analyzed by the full-wave electromagnetic simulation. Moreover, benefitting from the low-cost 3-D printing technique, the designed GRIN structure prototype with different pore densities of the polylactic acid material is fabricated. The near-field phase transform experiment at 28 GHz was carried out to verify the excellent focusing performance of the fabricated structure prototype. Besides, the characteristics of multifocal spots on the surface of the proposed structure are further confirmed by the mm-Wave WPT experiments with a GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuit rectenna …

Experimental Demonstration of Millimeter-Wave Self-Bending Over-Obstacle Focused Beam Using Single Phase-Modulated 3-D Printed Dielectric Plate Structure

In this paper, we demonstrated a self-bending beam with over-obstacle focusing characteristic by using a single phase-modulated dielectric plate at 28GHz. Unlike conventional near-field focusing, this self-bending over-obstacle focusing offers a promising solution to enhance the efficiency and reliability of WPT systems, particularly in scenarios where obstacles are present between the transmitter and receiver. The phase profile of proposed phase-modulated plate structure is a phase combination form of a radial phase plate and a Fourier lens. Benefiting from low-cost 3-D printing technology, a prototype of the proposed phase-modulated plate is fabricated. Based on full wave simulation and near-field measurement experiment, we analyzed this unique self-bending focusing behavior at 28 GHz in detail. The experiment results indicate that even if the obstacle of metal plate is placed in front of the phase-modulated …
