APHICIDAL POTENTIAL OF THE ESSENTIAL OIL ISOLATED FROM PISTACIA LENTISCUS AGAINST THE LARVAE OF APHIS SPIRAECOLA, VECTOR OF MULTIPLE PHYTOVIRUSES

This study aims to determine the composition of the essential oil of Pistacia lentiscus leaves by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and to test its insecticidal activity against the larvae of Aphis spiraecola, which represents a serious threat to citrus production and cause most economic loss for the citrus culture. The essential oil of lentisk leaves was isolated by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type, the chemical composition was determined by GC/MS. The insecticidal activity of essential oil was determined by using the contact method against A. spiraecola larvae. A total of 74 compounds were identified, corresponding to chromatographic peaks representing 89.6% of the total area of all peaks. The most abundant compounds were monoterpene hydrocarbons (54.2%) with 8.8% p-cymene and 7.2% α-pinene. The insecticidal assay revealed an interesting insecticidal activity against the larvae of A. spiraecola with an LD50 of 0.2 µL. This study introduces and supports the use of the essential oil of P. lentiscus as a biopesticide and open new ways for its future exploitation in phytosanitary industries.

A ethnobotanical survey of medicinal plants consumed during holy month of Ramadan in Chlef region, Algeria

Background: The fasting month of Ramadan is the fourth pillar of Islam. This religious practice is characterized by a specific style of life, culinary and phytotherapeutic habits in Muslim societies. The aim of this research is to document information about the traditional medicinal knowledge of herbal species used during the holy month of Ramadan in the region of Chlef, north-west Algeria.Methods: This ethnobotanical survey was conducted during the holy month of Ramadan in 1442 Hijrah, corresponding to 13 April–12 Mai 2021. The information was gathered through semi-structured interviews with 100 fasting Muslim informants ranging in age from 18 to 71 years. The obtained data were analyzed using the following indices: Use Value (UV), Family Use Value (FUV) and Informant Consensus Factor (ICF).Results: In the current and first Ramadanian ethnobotanical survey, 38 herbal species distributed into 22 families were recorded in the Chlef region, north-west Algeria. Lamiaceae was the dominant botanical family explored in phyto-folk medicine, with 8 species. Leaves and aerial parts (22.22% each) represent the main plant parts valorized. Decoction (32.35%) and infusion (27.94%) were the principal preparation methods adopted for making remedies from medicinal herbs. Species supported by Quran verses and prophetic orientation are widely consumed during the month of Ramadan and record UVs indexes superior to 0.5. SURVEY OF BARLEY STRIPE MOSAIC VIRUS (BSMV) IN MULTIPLE CEREAL VARIETIES CULTIVATED IN CHLEF PROVINCE, NORTHWEST OF ALGERIA

This study was designed to survey Barley Stripe Mosaic Virus (BSMV) in various cereal varieties cultivated in 28 fields cultivated in seven districts namely Boukadir, Sobha, Ouled Fares, Tadjena, Kaloul, Abou Elhacene and El Karimia located in Chlef province, North West of Algeria. The survey covered 2 barley, 2 durum wheat, 4 common wheat and one oat varieties and conducted from February to the May 2017. The main objectives of this investigation were to determine the incidence of Barley Stripe Mosaic Virus in crop cereals cultivated in Algeria as well as to verify the resistant varieties. The Barley Stripe Mosaic Virus was examined in plants and seeds symptomatically by mechanical inoculation and serologically by TAS-ELISA technique using specific monoclonal antibodies. The symptoms surveying noticed more expression in spike cereals. The results of serological analysis revealed infection of 27 fields that present 96.24%. The mechanical inoculation test proved infection of totality of seed lots and seeds transmission test showed efficiency of seed transmission with a rate of 77%. In terms of species susceptibility, barley was the most susceptible crop followed by durum wheat and common wheat, whereas the oat was not infected. This investigation is the first report on Barley Stripe Mosaic Virus naturally infecting cereals in the cereal producer zone of Chlef. The findings provide useful information on viral infection of cereal fields, thus, as a priority measurement there is a need to reinforce control of cereal seeds.

Bacterial contamination of neglected hospital surfaces and equipment in an Algerian hospital: An important source of potential infection

Hospital surfaces are heavily contaminated with bacteria, which are a potential source of nosocomial infections. This study was undertaken to identify bacterial communities isolated from neglected hospital surfaces after cleaning routine in a Algerian public hospital. Screening of bacterial contamination in patient bed (PB), reception land-line phones (TF), door handles (DH) and medical equipment (ME) during five months generated 108 inocula. Isolates obtained were identified based on biochemical characteristics and confirmed by analysis of 16S rRNA sequences. Statistical analysis was performed to reveal possible relationship between bacterial diversity and swabbed surfaces. CREATION OF FUNCTIONAL SOLID FOOD MODEL ENRICHED WITH CALAMINTHA NEPETA (L.) SAVI.: KINETIC GAIN OF PHENOLICS COMPOUND

The current research looks to benefit from Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi. in food enrichment by using osmotic dehydratation (OD) for supplementing a solid foodstuff model. The kinetic gain of food model in terms of individual phenolics using HPLC-DAD, total phenolics (TPC), total flavonoids contents (TFC) as well as antioxidant properties were examined at different impregnation times. The food model gained the same phenolics profile of osmotic solution dominated by acacetin and Cryptochlorogenic acid. The enrichment process created a rich osmo-dehydrated food in TPC and TFC reaching the bioactive features of most of rich-in-phenolics human foods. The food model exhibited a potent antioxidant activity, even at a short impregnation time (4h), attaining 92.07±3.63% as β-carotene bleaching potency and 47.64±0.59%(at 10 mg/mL) as DPPH scavenging capacity. The kinetic gain of individual phenolics compounds depends on their concentration. This investigation supports valorization of Calamintha nepeta for the production of functional foods.

Caractérisation phénolique et diversité génétique fondée sur des marqueurs moléculaires des populations de Phlomis biloba récoltées de la région de Chlef.

Phlomis biloba Desf. (Syn.: P. crinita) est une source de remèdes traditionnels dans la zone méditerranéenne. Pour une valorisation effective de ses vertus thérapeutiques, ce travail vise l’étude de la diversité génétique basée sur les marqueurs moléculaires ISSR (Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat), la caractérisation phénolique et le potentiel antioxydant des fleurs et des feuilles de six populations de P. biloba récoltées de Sidi Amer (SAM), Medjadja (MEJ), El-Nakhla (ENK), Taougrite (TAW), Abou El Hassen (AHS) et Ouled ben abdelkader (AOK) situant dans la wilaya de Chef. Variation of Phenolic Content and Antioxidant Activity in Organs and Populations of Phlomis crinita L.

Introduction: The medicinal plant Phlomis crinita L. is widely used in Mediterranean folk medicine for its various pharmacological effects, especially to heal wounds and relieve abdominal pain.Objective: Determine the phenolic and flavonoid content of hydromethanolic extracts obtained from Phlomis crinita L. leaves and flowers, as well as their antioxidant properties.Methods: Total phenolic and flavonoid content was determined by spectrophotometry with the Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminum chloride methods. Antioxidant activity was estimated by the β-carotene-linoleic acid system and the 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical assay.Results: Phytochemical examination showed that the content of bioactive compounds was clearly greater in leaf extracts than in flower extracts. The content of phenolic compounds varied between the three populations (p< 0.05), with the Ouled Benabdelkader population exhibiting the largest content (117.96±1.70 μg GAE/mg). The greatest flavonoid content was found in leaves of Medjadja, followed by Ouled Benabdelkader and el-Nakhla (p< 0.05). The leaf extracts with the strongest antioxidant activity were the ones from the Ouled Benabdelkader population, of great importance in terms of DPPH free radical scavenging capacity. Maximum effect was achieved with a CI50= 73.80±1.58 μg/ml. This potency is highly correlated with flavonoid content.Conclusions: The study revealed the richness of P. crinita in bioactive compounds characterized by great antioxidant properties which make them a potentially valuable natural remedy.

El contenido de compuestos fenólicos varió entre las tres poblaciones (p< 0, 05). La muestra de la población de Ouled benabdelkader fue la de mayor contenido (117, 96±1, 70 μg GAE/mg). El mayor contenido de flavonoides lo mostraron las hojas de Medjadja, seguido por las provenientes de Ouled benabdelkader y el-Nakhla (p< 0, 05). Los extractos de hojas que tuvieron la actividad antioxidante más fuerte fueron los de la población Ouled benabdelkader, con gran importancia en la capacidad secuestradora del radical libre de DPPH.
